2016 TGO Challenge: no go

DSC02857
I won’t be applying for the 2016 TGO Challenge. I gave my wife the veto and she has exercised it. I’m hoping I’ll be able to apply for the 2017 Challenge or failing that, 2018. This almost guarantees that the weather next year will be fabulous, so apply while you can.

  1. Shame. If you get a week’s pass and fancied Norway I could give you some pointers. I must post soon on the lovely Hardangervidda (was there beginning of Sept) which has it all really and is in easy reach from the UK.

  2. Aww, shame! Still, far enough.
I cheated and didn’t even put it up for discussion (David would really rather I didn’t Challenge…) He is still talking to me 😉

    1. One condition of going this year was that she had the veto. TBH, 16 days is a long time to be away when you’re not well.

  3. Very sorry to hear that as I know you get and give such a lot to the Challenge. I had to give it a lot of thought myself as own wife has disabilities that need to be planned around. There’s also a few other things I want to do before I’m too old – Cambrian Way, Cape Wrath Trail, Tour de Mont Blanc and in fairness only a finite number of ‘passouts’ I ought to claim. In the end the form’s gone in and I’ll save those other walks for the time I get rejected from the ballot.
I look forward to reading of your other future trips though.

    1. Thanks. One plan is to split the Cambrian Way into three section and do three separate weeks. Or maybe the same with the Pennine Way.

      1. I think that’s a good plan. The Cambrian Way falls naturally into 3 sections, and as someone who finds it difficult to do more than about 10 days on a trip, that’s how I’m doing it.

  4. Thing is, to have done it even once is quite something. Personally, I’ve never seen the point of a group backpacking event, never mind doing it more than once but I know a lot of people like it. Hope your wife is OK.

    1. Thanks. Understand what you’re saying but the nice thing about the Challenge is being able to mix and match solo and walking in company. This year I reckon it was half and half.

  5. It’s a shame you’re not doing it in 2016, Robin, but everyone has other things which sometimes take priority. The hills and glens and nasty boggy bits will still be there next time you’re free. I really must get round to sending off my application. My guaranteed (10th) place only exists if I apply for it!

  6. Oh that’s a bugger, but being in a similar home situation I do understand. We’ll perhaps catch up another time, sooner rather than later!

  7. I am sorry to hear we won’t have the pleasure of your company, but I completely understand you and your family’s situation. I hope you have a great time whatever you decide to do and think of the poor unfortunates slogging across Scotland in May!

  8. Sorry to hear this Robin – I hope your wife’s health improves. I won’t be on TGOC’16 as dates clash with my daughter’s wedding – I suggested that she change the date but she treated this suggestion with the contempt it probably deserves. Hope to see you in 2017.

  9. At least it gives you plenty of time to plan your route 😊 I’m not able to apply for next year either, a work colleague gets married and goes on honeymoon the same dates of the challenge. Lots of things on my tick list to choose from though and an opportunity to get more experience backpacking. Looking forward to your future trip reports.

    Margaret
