On Sunday night I was lucky enough to see the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican. The program was Don Quixote by Richard Strauss and Symphony No 5 by Vaughan Williams. Don Quixote wasn’t really to my taste, but Symphony No 5 was wonderful. The conductor was Andre Previn. Previn is 81 and looked very frail. He conducted from a chair and had difficulty getting up and down the steps. Nevertheless, he and the LSO were on top form with a gorgeous Fifth. RVW’s Fifth is my favourite symphony, so it was a real treat to hear it live. Although I’ve got two serious HiFi’s, nothing beats live music. In March, it will be a complete contrast as I shall be seeing Van Der Graaf Generator.
