In my tent

I know some of you like to see what it looks like in other people’s tents, so here’s a couple I took in the Cairngorms when I was holed up for a day. Reasonably tidy.

    • I find a large watertight container useful to prevent food from being crushed, keeping food fresh, keeping insects out. True they are not ultralight (c.300g) but I like them. Don’t forget I was carrying 5 days of food.

  1. That Laser Comp of yours looks like a veritable tardis…!!!

Is that an MSR Titan kettle I see? Have you not found a DIY means of insulating the handles, or is there no need (having just bought one myself)?

    • The porch ground sheet makes the useable area huge.

I have a MSR Titan kettle, but in the picture is the Snow Peak Solo which is a bit smaller. I use a handkerchief for the handles although in the past I have used a pot grab.

  2. Is that a cord tied around the Neoair? I know that it is high off of the ground but to belt yourself in………………

    • :) I have a thin piece of tent underlay which I use to wrap the tent when it’s packed and also use underneath my sleep mat for extra insulation. So it doesn’t slip I use a piece of elastic round the NeoAir and the underlay. I thought the underlay would also be useful if the NeoAir failed. I won’t bother with it in the future, unless it’s winter.

  3. Mine looks a lot like yours, except for many freezer bags and only one plastic food box.

My stove always sits on the ground now, ever since it tipped over, the footprint directed the hot water towards the inner tent and the burner made a hole in the footprint that opened too late for said water to drain through. No conflagration, luckily. Are the three nifty feet under your gas canister available separately?

  4. Robin, surely you could’ve cut a bit off the tea-bag puller outer!

John – Primus also sell similar feet, they’re good. With a short tent peg or two, you can skewer them into the ground making the whole stove assembly very secure.

  5. Robin, great photo, my tent sometimes looks that tidy. I do find my medium Neo Air occupies a bit of the head room when using my Montbell pilllow at the end of the comp.

    • I use the Ajungilak pillow and find the same. It takes time to get used to the feeling of confinement around your head.

  6. Crikey, what’s all that?. I can see I’ll have to take a photo of mine next time out if I remember, to compare and contrast.
All my stuff that isn’t needed that night is in my pack in the porch. In the inner, the long sides are completely clear, everything I need is in the little triangle behind my head.
I agree about the underlays and – especially – the plastic box: unnecessary dead weight. My food is fine in polythene bags, and is perfectly ok even if it does happen to get a bit squashed.
I probably won’t use my NeoAir in winter, it will be the Exped Downmat. It might be ok when lying down, but in the sitting position my bum is practically touching the ground.

  7. Is that a Primus gas canister foot is see? How stable are they?

I was thinking of buying one of these, as use a Crux Lite stove with a Coleman 100 gas canister on short trips which is pretty unstable.

    • It’s actually some Jetboil feet, but I can really recommend them to add stability to the stove.

  8. Mmm, Nalgene Widemouth “Cantene”. Been after one for ages but no luck in UK. An import, I take it?
Agree about the Jetboil feet, which are a much the neatest design. Pricey though if you have no Jetboil as they come in a kit along with the support for non-Jetboil pans. Saw one at £20 in Outside yesterday!
