Integral Designs

What a great little company. I came across them on the Ultralight Outdoor Gear website. I’ve come to realise that all the stuff sacks etc that I use actually add up to quite a lot of weight. I like to be organised, so you won’t persuade me to stick everything in one liner. The design of the Mariposa with its external mesh pockets means that it’s sensible to have a rain cover, just to keep the wet out, even if most of my gear is in waterproof stuff sacks. I don’t wear gaiters very often, but I like to have them just in case a bit of bog trotting is required.

Integral Designs have enabled me to save a fair amount of weight with their products. The Shortie eVENT gaiters weigh 71g vs 186g for the Aguille gaiters I have been carrying. A saving of 115g. True, they are shorter, but they’ll keep the bog out of my boots.

I bought a silcoat pack cover (small) weighing 76g vs the 227g of the Osprey one I had been using.  It fits the Mariposa almost perfectly. 151g saved. I also bought the large size pack liner (which is enormous) weighing 85g against the 130g of the Exped sack I’ve been using, saving 45g. All in all, that’s 311g saved. It just shows how, with a bit of care, significant weight savings can be made on less obvious bits of gear.

  1. the odd thing is that I was about to purchase one of the ID rain covers too a few days ago for use with my Osprey Talons, then I went back to my old Berghaus Freeflow packs. They came with a detachable rain cover. I was expecting it to wear a ton. Well, the strange thing is that it only weighed 59g! Needless to say I didn’t put the order through!

But you’re right about the cumulative effect of weight saving out of minor component of one’s kit. Mind you, this malarkey lightens the weight of your wallet just as effectively…

  2. It gets to the stage that the only way to save weight is by looking at things like stuff Sacks etc, it seems strange to be looking at saving a few grams but as we know they add up. I changes from exped roll tops (2) to Sea to Summit for that reason.

As Andy says, it lightens your wallet more than your pack ;-)

  3. blimey, looks like you have a lot of similar kit to me…. good taste and great minds alike etc :)

The ID shorty gaiters are great although after 18months of use they are starting to wear in a few places but hey ho they cant last forever

  4. I’ll second the Shortie Gaiters, all the gaiter I needed last winter here in Norway. Stunning bits of kit.

It is amazing how much weight you can save just by having a long hard look at what kind of dry bag/stuff sacks you use and also how many. Do you really need each piece of kit in a separate little bag?

  5. The ID gaiters are excellent. But Robin, do you really, really, really, really need a pack liner and waterproof stuff sacs for everything AND a pack cover? Really?! !!
