Ticked off

On Friday, I had my first encounter with ticks. I was camped in the Rothiemurchus Forest, having a lazy morning. As it was hot, I had only shorts on. Big mistake! Back in the tent, writing my trail diary, I noticed what looked like a splinter in my upper thigh. Using some tweezers from my Swiss Army penknife I pulled it out and to my horror, it was a tick, the first I’d ever encountered.

A cursory examination revealed four other little blighters. Out with the tick lasso and after some contortions they were removed. I then spotted one on my toe still looking for a meal, so I crushed it. Then there was another on my leg that got the same treatment. After a thorough examination with a mirror, I couldn’t spot any more, so I put on my Montane Featherlight pants to provide protection.

On returning home I had a shower, which revealed about fifteen bites. The stupid thing is, I could probably avoided most by wearing trousers and by using the anti-bug spray that I brought with me (Prevent). Camping in the same spot last year I had no problems. Foolishly I thought there was no tick problem. Next time I will be  a lot more careful. I’m amazed at how small they are and how difficult to spot. I just hope the aches I can feel are just the product of recent exertions rather than anything more serious.

15 tick bites in one day????

5 definites, 10 probables

never had any problems before, must be a combination of carelessness, bad luck and fine weather

Ticks are on the rise and if you’re unlucky 15 bites is not unheard of. Long trousers are useful but they still won’t stop the little blighters getting in I’m afraid.

I got about 30 one day climbing in Glen Etive - Mrs. Stravaiger set about me with tweezers and alcohol! Just keep an eye on the bite sites. Look for rings appearing.
btw - thanks for the Fords of Avon news. Thinking about going there later on. I heard the doss was pretty minging.

Wow. I hate the wee bstds. Paranoid about them as we used to have to do body-checks coming in off the peats back Home. Memories of picking thm off pets, especially the free-ranging cats when visiting grandparents in South Lochs.

I seem to have got them before the sucked any blood as they were very small, like spiders. I can recommend the tick lasso as an easy way to remove them.

Alistair, there’s a picture of the Fords of Avon as they were last Monday on the next post.

Thanks for the pic BPL - sorry I don’t even know your name! I wish I was there right know (clicks heels).
I never tire of the view of Loch Avon. It’s one of the best mountain fastnesses on the planet IMVHO

Loch Avon is stunning. Another visit is called for. It’s Robin BTW.
